Building community... (9/11/15)
We have been working really hard to learn our routines and procedures for this year. Behavior expectations and work expectations are being set, and the students surprise me more and more everyday with how amazing they are! So far, I have not set a goal the haven't been able to reach. I am super proud of them. I am truly thankful for each and every one of them in my room and can't wait to see how this year plays out. One of the biggest ideas that we have talked a lot about (and will continue to talk about throughout the year) is how everyone is different, and how these differences make our class team unique, special, and perfect in its own way. A few books we have read together about this topic are "Ish", "Ribbit", and "Red -a crayon's story". After many discussions around these books and more, we did our first "art Friday" activity. Once everyone's art was hanging on display, we all stepped back to admire them. Students commented on how everyone's art was "soccerball-ish", yet very different. And though they all looked different they were really cool and beautiful - just like them!
Where are all the worksheets, papers, and work? (9/9/15)
(9/9/15) As many of you have noticed, there are not a lot of worksheets or completed student work coming home. This is because the majority of the work taking place is being kept here. Currently during Writer's Workshop, students are working on personal narratives (stories about themselves). As we get farther into the writing process, I will send packets of their writing home for you to see their progress. Below you can see pictures of some of our writers hard at work.
We have also begun managed independent learning centers. This is a student favorite. During this time students play games and work with peers to reinforce learning taking place during our literacy block. As students work through their centers, I will be working with small groups of students for guided reading or assessments. Check out their amazing center work below. So far we know 8 out of 20 centers that will all be taking place at once!
Lastly, I am currently taking a class at Ohio State about inquiry based teaching. Basically, this is teaching in a way that is very student centered and it allows for students to discover a lot of what they learn. This is why you haven't seen math worksheets come home like they have in the past. Below you can see some snapshots of math... Students have been very excited to get to math each day!
Mumkin sales begin today! (9/8/15)
This is an awesome way to earn money for our PTO fund! (We have the best ever PTO here at Graham!). Please check your child's book bag for the white envelope with order forms, information, and a prize list! Look at the back of the catalog for information about selling electronically! Caught Being Good!!
9/8/15 - We had our first "Caught Being Good" on the announcements today. Way to go! Keep working hard!
Overall, behavior has been outstanding this year! I am extremely blessed to have a wonderful group of kiddos! Voice level is the area we struggle most with, but it tends to be good noise - just loud. Please remind your student to continue to be excited about learning but to work on the voice level. Whispers are best to let everyone think. :)
So far so good...
(8/28/15) We are off to a great start! Students have been excellent this week. I am growing more and more excited for this year after spending the first few days with this group. We are truly becoming a team and are making excellent choices. Keep it up, kiddos! :) If you have not, please get your "Parent Homework" folder completed and returned ASAP. Be sure to include your website permission slip. As soon as I have everyone's forms back, and I know who can and cannot be on the website, I will do my best to start posting pictures! Thanks for a great first week!
Open House/1st Day
